Why Is There A Tiny Bit Of Italy Inside Switzerland?
In one corner of southern Switzerland, there is a tiny piece of Italy that seems to have accidentally broken off from the rest of the country. So what is it doing there? I travelled to beautiful Lake Lugano to see for myself...

Переглядів 148 тис.Місяць тому
Yes! It's the second - and therefore almost certainly final - episode of my exciting new series about 1920s factory rooftop test tracks. And today, we are visiting the village of Nessonvaux in Belgium to find out what happened to the old Impéria factory and its historic circuit... Lingotto: The Last Surviving 1920s Factory Rooftop Racetrack (Yes, There Were Others)
Переглядів 472 тис.2 місяці тому
In 1923, the city of Turin unveiled a huge new car factory, with one very special feature: it had a high-speed circuit on the roof, complete with banked curves, and two 500m-long straights. But why would you put a racetrack on the roof of a factory? I travelled to northern Italy to see it for myself... The Greenwich Meridian's Forgotten Rival
Переглядів 253 тис.3 місяці тому
If you've ever been to the Louvre, you may have stumbled across a small disc bearing the word "Arago" and the letters "N" and "S" - or in other words, the exact location of the old Paris Meridian. But what's the story there? How close did Paris ever get to becoming THE meridian? And why did we end up with Greenwich instead? I decided to investigate... Can You Beat The Oslo Metro On A Toboggan?
Переглядів 182 тис.4 місяці тому
This video is a paid collaboration with Visit Oslo, and I've no idea how I've got away with it. But anyway: at the northern end of Oslo's Line 1, there are two stations which are connected not just by the Metro, but also by the toboggan track from the 1955 World Luge Championships. So which one gets you there faster: metro, or toboggan? There's only one way to find out: I hired a toboggan. (I d...

    Since we are discussing pedantry, it is - pedantically speaking - an “exclave” of Spain, not an enclave.

    • @TheTimTraveller
      @TheTimTraveller День тому

      Both terms are correct. Being separated from Spain makes it an exclave; being surrounded by France makes it an enclave. You can describe it as an exclave of Spain, or a Spanish enclave in France.

    In Madrid the trains usually run on the left, that's why Madrid metro runs on the left, but the commuter rail that is driven on the right right , except on the oldest line that drives on the left. So they have to build a massive underpass/overpass to do the switch. www.google.es/maps/@40.5126727,-3.871791,1921m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu

    So far as I know, the oldest intact buildings that I've seen are a quarter mile beneath the surface of the sea, if the coast of Cuba. The last time that area was exposed to air was at least 13,000 years ago, during the last ice age.

    You pronounced "tunnelen" perfectly, which is extra weird because it's an outlier word that doesn't follow any set rules of Norwegian. If we spelled it more like we spell other words with the same stress/pitch pattern it should be "tunellen"

    Strikes me that a mausoleum is a stretch to call a building too, if the babylonian tower doesnt count. Its not habitation or a olace of work or meaningful ahelter. It's a monument to the dead.
